A congenital heart defect is a problem with the structure of the heart. It is present at the time of birth. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of major birth defects.

The heart of an infant begins to develop shortly after conception. During development, structural defects may occur. These defects may affect the walls of the heart, heart valves, arteries and veins close to the heart. Congenital heart defects can disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart. The flow can be:

Slow ?Hacerse
?IR in the wrong direction or the wrong place
Completely blocked ?estar

Treatment of the defect may include medicines, surgery and other medical procedures and heart transplants. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the defect and of the age, size and the overall health of the child. Today, many children born with complex congenital heart defects grow to adulthood and lead productive lives.
